Rhodiola Rosea

Earlier I sent out a little knowledge bomb which was directed somewhat towards the men ♂️(if you missed it, check it out here), and although this one is for EVERYONE, my ladies might want to listen up. We’re gonna talk about: Rhodiola Rosea.

The reason this awesome little adaptogen is sometimes marketed toward women ♀️is because of its effects on hormone related symptoms that occur during hormonal fluctuations (which all women experience). It offers support for stress response, mood, and overall well-being during these fluctuations.

Existing evidence suggests it may have estrogen receptor-related effects, or work like a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM). SERMs are compounds that bind directly to estrogen receptors and act as estrogen agonists in some tissues and antagonists in others, and can prevent, delay, or mitigate menopause-related cognitive, psychological, cardiovascular and osteoporotic conditions. Again, it is not a SERM, but emerging research suggests Rhodiola may exhibit SERM-like activity and interact with estrogen-related signaling pathways.

As much as I love the science and using terms like hormonal fluctuations, I’m gonna cut straight to the chase and tell you (LADIES), this has been my go-to supplement for stabilizing HOT FLASHES! 🥵🔥

But it’s not just for the ladies. It is for everyone (almost everyone- I’ll get to that on when to be cautious), male or female because physiologically, it works through: cortisol regulation, and nervous system support.

While I mentioned the hormonal benefits for women, men can benefit just as much especially for:

  • Physical performance and endurance

  • Mental fatigue and burnout

  • Stress-related low energy

  • Recovery from intense training

Who it’s best for (regardless of gender)

Rhodiola is most studied for:

  • Stress-related exhaustion

  • Burnout

  • Reduced endurance under fatigue

Therefore it tends to work best for people who feel:

  • “Wired but tired”

  • Burned out but still pushing

  • Mentally foggy under stress

If I had to describe this adaptogen, I’d call it a stress normalizer. Not necessarily a stimulant, but when we are experiencing fatigue it does have anti-fatigue effects, helps with endurance, and improves cognitive function. Its primary actions are directed to the Central Nervous System (CNS) due to its influence on the levels of the neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for their degradation. In other words, it helps maintain higher levels of key neurotransmitters involved in mood, motivation, and cognition. At rest it doesn’t have much effect but when stress is present that’s when it really steps up- It’s like the army on call- for when #@%$ hits the fan.

**Smallest effective dose: 100-150mg, 2xday. Best in the morning as it is stimulatory and enhances focus.

⚠️ When to be cautious

Rhodiola increases the activity of the immune system. Do not take if on immunosuppressants or prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Also can lower blood pressure.

It may not be ideal if someone:

  • Is very anxious or overstimulated

  • Has trouble sleeping (if taken too late)

💡 Bottom line

Rhodiola is a stress + energy adaptogen for humans—not for a specific gender. But ladies, I’m tellin ya, this has really worked for me in helping to control symptoms related to hormone fluctuations 😉👍
