Coach Tish here-
Thanksgiving gravy train! What does that even mean?! Actually, I don’t know- I just used it to because I couldn’t think of a title and just wanted to get your attention 😀
It’s that time of year again, so just a quick reminder of some simple tips to make sure you’re the boss of your decisions and mindset and health this season.
First: Remember you are in control. You are in control of your choices, your reactions, your attitude. There are many different feelings and family dynamics around the holidays. A lot of emotions both positive and negative- for some it’s exciting, lovely, and even relaxing, and for others it’s a whole different story. No matter what: SELF REGULATE. Breath. Even detach if you need to, but self regulate!
Second: On that note, just remember that you don’t have to explain anything to anyone and you don’t have to educate or judge others. Educate yes, if there’s curiosity and openness to it- otherwise what you eat or don’t eat is none of their business! And DON’T shame yourself. PERIOD.
Third: Stay hydrated. Simple. Just do it. If you’re drinking alcohol- drink water.
Fourth: Veggies first! If you haven’t already heard me say this 1000 times already then here ya go! Being intentional about food order has enormous positive benefits for your appetite, cravings, and blood sugar regulation- just to name a few.
How many more do you want?! So simple they couldn’t possibly be effective, right? They seriously are.
Fifth: Sip a tablespoon of balsamic or apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before, during, or after you eat, especially treats or heavy carbs. Don’t like vinegar, try lemon water- not quite the same effect but still useful.
Sixth: Balance. If you’re eating carbs, great! just pair them with one of the other macros: a fat or protein, or both. For example, instead of a handful of grapes only as you’re grazing, have a few nuts or some cheese or meat with them.
Seventh: Move after you eat! I know, I know, it’s nap time. Just move for ten minutes and then snuggle into the couch for as long as you want. Why not make it a family affair and all go for a walk, or have a dance party, or play a game of charades. Actually I had someone from the gym family tell me a great activity they came up with- while watching football, everytime something happened it was paired with movement: touchdown=20 pushups, flag=10 squats, ect…maybe you have a family member with a certain quirk that you could pair a movement with, but don’t hurt anyone’s feeling of course! Uncle Bob tends to end his stories by saying “ya know” = 15 jacks, or 20 sit ups when someone sneezes or yawns- idk!!
Eighth: Be intentional about having and giving gratitude! Being thankful shifts our attention. It somehow softens the hard edges of life and gives us the strength to keep moving with an open heart.
Oh how bout this?! Don’t just ride the gravy train- take the wheel (or whatever trains are driven with) and drive that thing!
