We need to stop saying, “I’m just not motivated”! Because the reality is ALL behavior is motivated. In other words there are underlying reasons why we do EVERYTHING we do whether we realize it or not. We are always engaging in goal-directed behavior. And I’ve said before, our drive doesn’t usually come from actually getting the thing, but the way the thing makes us feel or how we think it will make us feel.
So we need to be asking ourselves, “What’s motivating me?” “What is my goal-directed behavior?” I don’t want to get off the couch and take a walk or go to the gym, because what’s motivating me in that moment is perhaps avoiding assumed discomfort, or the belief that by sitting here I’m gaining relief of some sort. It may sound simple, but I believe just being aware of what’s actually driving our behavior is the biggest way
or at least the first step in taking control and redirecting our motivation.
One of my greatest motivators: FEAR. And what does that motivate me to do: NOTHING. STAY STILL. But you see, the problem with fear is it’s based solely on the unknown: I’m not scared of the cliff because it’s so high, I’m scared because I MIGHT fall. I’m scared because of what might happen. The unknown. But what about NOT falling off the cliff?! Yah, getting outside or going to the gym might mean: facing people, feeling some pain, being tired, being pushed…OR, motivation reframed, it might mean: creating social connections, bonds & accountability, feeling that fatigue that makes you push harder to the next level, actually being energized, and extreme growth.
So what’s motivating you? If it’s fear, Rich Roll said it best in his book Finding Ultra, “THE ONLY CURE FOR FEAR…IS FAITH."
What side of the unknown will you choose to believe? What motivation and goal-directed behavior will you let guide your life? -Coach Tish
